Ideas should make sense. Coherent ideas have better stories.
Which of these two jokes, from The Invisible Gorilla, do you find funnier?
1. Question: What is as big as a man, but weighs nothing? Answer: His shadow.
2. If a kid asks where rain comes from, I think a cute thing to tell him is “God is crying.” And if he asks why God is crying, another cute thing to tell him is “Probably because of something you did.”
The first has no story. The second is all story. The second is more coherent and funnier.
Stories need a sensible progression to have impact. A compelling story is what separates a good idea from a nonsense one.
Don’t repeat every idea you hear. You should be sure it makes sense with everything else you know about. Updating is a constant process. You’ll always need to learn.
Compare against what you already know and see if it makes sense.
The benefit of checking is your predictions improve. That makes life easier.
