A Tendency for Diversity of Life

Evolution does not mean progress, or even a growth in complexity.

I totally agree with this statement. There is one thing that does seem to happen, sort of.

The evolutionary biologist Stephen Jay Gould proposes that while neither progress nor complexity are inherently selected, there does seem to be a tendency for an increase in diversity of life.

More niches, taking advantage of eating other niches as food, creates more niches eating those niches.
