Life is made twisty because we choose.
We choose the things to believe, we choose the things to not believe.
Disagree? Well, do you seek out opposing beliefs? Do you read them all and understand them? Do you even care about the truth?
The truth is, there is no capital-T truth. There is only what you choose.
Now, this choice is not even really yours. Did you choose where you’d be born? Probably not.
Your choices exist only within a supportive environment. In essence, the environment of your past ancestors has made you who you are and what you can experience.
But let us put aside the true nature of nonchoice and instead look at what happens when you have choice.
If you have choice to believe, then how do you make up your mind what to believe?
I believe hypnosis can change the automatic programs running in your brain. That is, beliefs.
However, if I rewrite my belief, I must choose what to rewrite them to. That requires having beliefs about what beliefs are best.
You may say, “I want to believe what is useful.” How do you decide what is useful from what is not? With beliefs.
Do you see the twisty nature of life, now? If it’s under your control what to believe, then how do you decide what to believe?
I would have said having fun and learning are good criteria. However, that’s just as up in the air as anything else.
“It makes me feel good” is just as arbitrary a deciding factor as anything else. Yet it’s probably the best.
Consider a machine that could build itself into whatever it desired. The most base level is going to make the ultimate decisions for the rest of it, just like feeling good can help us decide between alternatives.
The point of this idea is that if nothing has meaning until you give it meaning, then you cannot judge ideas you do not like as wrong.
If you suddenly can see the wholesomeness of both sides of the coin, you gain perspective for the arguments of both sides.
That perspective lets you have compassion for the people proposing the idea. You’ll come to see their perspective more viscerally.
Nothing is right or wrong until you choose for it to be so. Cultivate compassion for all.
Mathematically speaking I am right because I have more numbers in my age!
